Notes about William Gibson

Martin Irvine <irvinemj@gusun.georgetown.edu> has produced a web document entitled William Gibson on the Web. It includes pointers to some online resources about author William Gibson. One of those resources is a brief literary history of William Gibson by Luke Sheneman <sheneman@cs.uidaho.edu>.

I don't agree with Sheneman's assertion that `Gibson is considered the father of the Cyberpunk paradigm'. Gibson was not the first cyberpunk author and I doubt he would never claim so himself. Also, I have a constitutional aversion to the word paradigm. In this case, I find its meaning stretched to the breaking point. I accept that cyberpunk can be considered a genre, but not a paradigm in any sense of the word.

More information about cyberspace, cyberpunk in particular, is available from the highly informative Cyberspace page at the University of Idaho's Laboratory for Applied Logic. You can also read my own notes about cyberspace.

S Page's William Gibson Bibliography / Mediagraphy is very good!
