Prospective Students

CS is about more than computers...

It's about hands-on learning. It's about creativity and problem solving. It's about preparing for a career. It's about people.

A computer science degree from Dalhousie is your opportunity to study and work in one of the most exciting growth industries in the world. From Google to gaming, Dalhousie CS grads are redefining the role technology plays in our daily lives, allowing us to conduct business, communicate and connect with one another better and faster.

If the idea of shaping the world with your fingertips excites you, our wide variety of programs and practical approach to classroom learning will ensure that you'll have the skills you need to succeed in the rapidly-expanding 21st century high-tech job market.

People and programs

With a low student/faculty ratio, our programs offer students countless opportunities to work and study alongside our more than 35 faculty members. Our professors bring with them diverse research backgrounds in disciplines ranging from visualization and animation to artificial intelligence and robotics to human computer interaction and electronic commerce. This allows you to tailor your studies to match your own interests.

You can choose our Bachelor of Computer Science program, which emphasizes creative problem solving and critical thinking and takes advantage of the latest developments in the field. Or, you can study in our Bachelor of Informatics program, a multidisciplinary program that studies how people transform technology and how technology transforms us. We also offer several graduate programs, including a Master of Computer Science, Master of Electronic Commerce, Master in Health Informatics and PhD.

Many of our programs offer the opportunity for co-op studies. Choose from a wide variety of jobs that earn you practical workplace experience and career contacts while helping to fund your degree. It's a great foot in the door with some of Canada's top information and computing technology companies like IBM, Research in Motion (RIM) and more.

Community computing

Dalhousie CS students call the Goldberg Computer Science Building home. Within its 70,000 square feet lives a community unlike any other on the campus. Students hang out and chat over coffee in the sunlit atrium, work side-by-side in our state-of-the-art labs, or gather in the Learning Centre where upper-year students help out with key concepts.

Many students get involved with the CS Society, our award-winning student society that boasts one of the highest participation rates on campus. From weekly socials to professional development workshops and ski trips, it's a great opportunity to get to know your classmates and professors outside of the classroom. There's also the Women in Technology Society (WiTS), advancing the role of women in computer science.

All of this at Dalhousie University, one of Canada's most respected and well-recognized research institutions. Located in the hub of Atlantic Canada's ITC sector (information and computing technology), you'll have opportunities to network with alumni and future employers and meet graduates in a number of different careers. There's nowhere else in Atlantic Canada where you'll get as much access to the best that the ITC sector has to offer.
