Congratulations to Dalhousie FCS Contestants and Presenters at APICS 2009

This year, the Annual APICS (Atlantic Provinces Council on the Sciences) Conference (http://sites.cs.dal.ca/apics/) was hosted at the Faculty of Computer Science, Dalhousie on October 23rd and 24th. This conference involves faculty and students from about 10 Universities in the Atlantic Region. This year's event was a great success and congratulations are in order to everyone concerned!

Our students were very successful in this year's competitions at the APICS Conference:

- Dalhousie University, Dalhousie Gold programming team, John Doucette, Ross Story, and Brian Wolff, won the third place in the Programming Competition and advance to the regionals. Congratulations to all of them!

- Catherine Holloway - supervisor Robert Bieko, from our faculty won the First Place in Undergraduate Presentation Award with their paper titled "Inferring Evolutionary Networks of Genomes using a Convex Optimization Procedure".

- Aaron Atwater - supervisor Nur Zincir-Heywood, from our faculty won the Second Place in Undergraduate Presentation Award with their paper titled "A Preliminary Study on Skype Traffic Classification using Machine Learning".

- Chris Whidden and Norbert Zeh, from our faculty won the First Place in Graduate Oral Presentation Award with their paper titled "A Unifying View on Approximation and FPT of Agreement Forests".

- Carlos Bacquet, Nur Zincir-Heywood and Malcolm Heywood, from our faculty won the First Place in Graduate Poster Presentation Award with their paper titled "An Investigation of Multi-objective Genetic Algorithms for Encrypted Traffic Identification".
