Graduate Degrees

For those students interested in advanced studies, the Faculty of Computer Science offers five different Master’s programs as well as our PhD program.
Master of Computer Science / Master of Applied Computer Science – The Master’s program offers both a thesis stream (Master of Computer Science, MCS) and a project-based stream (Master of Applied Computer Science, MACS). The thesis stream is appropriate for students who wish to pursue a career in research and development or possibly a PhD and an academic career. The program develops strong research skills and rewards those with desire to create and invent. The MACS project-based stream is intended primarily for students who intend to seek employment in industry. It is also open to students with degrees in other disciplines who wish to switch to a computer science / information technology career in industry.
Master of Electronic Commerce – The Master of Electronic Commerce (MEC) program is a full-time interdisciplinary program offered jointly by the Dalhousie Faculties of Computer Science, Law, and Management. It’s a unique academic degree that blends course work, research and an internship to give a commanding overview of a discipline with roots equally in technology, business, and social and economic policy.
Master of Health Informatics – The Master of Health Informatics is an integrated research and learning program that connects health care with technology and deals with the meaning and use of health information to support clinical care, health services administration, research and teaching. The program is a joint venture between the Faculty of Computer Science and the Faculty of Medicine.
Master of Science, Computational Biology and Bioinformatics – This interdisciplinary master's degree emphasizes thesis work and focuses on tackling problems in biology, molecular biology and health-related fields through significant research contributions in mathematics, statistics and computer science. Resources from the faculty of Computer Science, Medicine and Science are coordinated to offer a flexible program, with a limited course load and an emphasis on research activities.
Doctor of Philosophy, Computer Science – The PhD program enable candidates to investigate and develop a significant body of research. The diversity of the faculty is such that you will be presented with a broad range of research opportunities. All PhD students are accepted with funding, which is guaranteed for a minimum of four years, subject to successful completion of the milestones of the PhD program.
