Graduate Admission Requirements
All students must have the equivalent of a four-year undergraduate university degree and meet the admission requirements of the Faculty of Graduate Studies as set out in Section II of the Graduate Calendar.
Master's, thesis based (MCS)
Students who have an undergraduate degree in computer science, and a GPA of A- or better, may be accepted into the MCS program. Nominal duration of study is 4 terms.
Master's, project based (MACS)
Students who have an undergraduate degree in computer science, and a GPA between B+ and A-, may be accepted into the 1-year MACS program.
Students with an undergraduate or graduate degree in another discipline with a minimum GPA of A -, are admitted into the 2-year MACS program.
If a student does not have the equivalent of CSCI1100 and CSCI1101, the student will be required to complete these courses at Dalhousie University or at another university with an A- average before admission into the program.
PhD, Post Bachelor
This program is reserved for outstanding graduates of a four-year program with demonstrated research experience and/or excellent research potential.
All admitted PhD students, who are not funded by an external source and make satisfactory progress towards their degree, receive funding for up to four years in the post-Master's and up to five years in the post-Bachelor's PhD prograns.
GRE is recommended for international PhD applicants but not required.
However, meeting these requirements does NOT necessarily guarantee admission.
Non-Canadian applicants, whose native tongue is not English, require a TOEFL score of at least 92 (internet based) for admission into the program. The following other tests will also be accepted with the following minimum scores: IELTS, 7; CanTest, average of at least 4.5 with no band score lower than 4.0; CAEL, 70 overall, with no band score lower than 60. The TOEFL requirement may be waived where the student has completed a degree program at an institution where the language of instruction is English and the official transcripts reflect this fact.

The following is a checklist of items to be included in your application:
- Graduate Studies Application - Apply online OR by filling out the paper form available on the grad studies website.
- Two confidential reference letters
- Official TOEFL test score (A minimum score of 92 - internet based is required).
- CS Background Worksheet
- Statement of Intent
- General resume
- Evidence of research experience, such as publications and thesis summaries (PhD applicants only)
- Official transcripts sent directly from all institutions previously attended (includes copy for Faculty of Graduate Studies and a copy for the department).
- Graduate studies application fee. The application fee is currently $70
